A DIVORCED MOTHER FACED WITH ADHD DX. AND RX. : BLACKMAIL IN THE BLACKEST FORM L****** J*** B**** My 11-year old daughter has just been diagnosed as ADHD and the psychologist has recommended medication. (Her regular physician--the MD who has taken care of her since she was 3 months old--says that she is not ADHD and does not need medication.) [Fred A. Baughman Jr., MD:
My daughter is not doing well in 6th grade [Fred A. Baughman Jr., MD:
. Her grades began to fail when her father divorced me in 2000 and tried unsuccessfully for one year to gain custody of her. It was a very bitter divorce. I got full custody, but my ex convinced my daughter's guardian ad litim (who was the opposing attorney in my sister's bitter divorce) and the judge that he would be the best parent to help her with her homework. (I have a bachelor's & master's degree, and was one course away from a PhD when I had her in 1991.) My ex has her 3 nights a week, and allows her to watch television and/or listen to "soft music" (Shania Twain turned down low) on a walkman. While he reads a book or watches TV, she rushes through homework to watch more TV or to go outside to play with friends. I don't think she has ADHD [Fred A. Baughman Jr., MD:
. I think she is a goof-off who avoids homework because her dad lets her get away with it. I also think that you can't do your homework while you are listening to "Boot Scootin' Boogie" and "I'm Gonna Get You, Get You, Get You." This thing is now going to court. It is my understanding that I can possibly lose custody of my daughter if I refuse to go along with the psychologist's recommendation and allow her to be medicated. My heart is breaking at the thought of drugging this very capable, very bright child just because her father is not living up to his responsibilities as her "tutor." I am equally anguished over the fact that if I don't allow her to be drugged, the court could take her away from me. This seems like blackmail in the blackest form [Fred A. Baughman Jr., MD:
I am just a waitress with very little money to fight the court system. I am so afraid of losing my daughter--losing her not only through custody, but also losing her through mind-altering drugs. [Fred A. Baughman Jr., MD:
I live in *******, ********, 23 miles south of *********, ********. [Fred A. Baughman Jr., MD:
