I am writing to commend your excellent work in exposing dangers of this horrible fraud (ADHD) and the dangers of ritalin. I am 32 years old and have a masters degree from a internationally respected California university, however as a child a was considered a "problem child"... I wouldnt pay attention in class (bored to death), wouldnt do my homework (I saw no need to do a math problem 100+ times to "prove" that I knew how to do it...) and frequently argued with teachers (and more often then not, showed up the next day with a college level book checked out from the local library to prove I was right and they were wrong...they hated that). Needless to say, I was diagnosed with ADHD. From the 2nd grade until my junior year in highschool I was put on ever increasing dosages of Ritalin (the last few years my dosage was 35mg of "long lasting" Ritalin 4 times a day) (I've been told that thats "alot") I finally removed myself from medication simply by pretending to take the pills and after several months presenting my parents with a ziplock bag filled with hundreds of pills and told them I hadnt been taking them and pointed out that there hadnt been a noticable increase in my "bad behavior" (not to say I was a saint...just that it hadnt gotten worse). It was during my second year as a undergraduate at Ohio State that I took a IQ test that one of my dorm mates was administering for a class project that I finally learned the truth... according to the tests, my IQ was 186... [Fred A. Baughman Jr., MD:
looking back with 20/20 hindsight, its no wonder that I thought school was boring and that my teachers were idiots... But instead of being put into a "gifted" set of classes, the schools and the doctors medicated me until I was "normal" (what a ugly word). Now I have to live the with aftermath of all those years of unnecessary medication... The most pronounced side effect that I have (and this is more then slightly embarrasing...) is the inability to acheive climax with a partner...the erection is there...just no "fireworks" at the end... (this, in fact was what prompted me to stop using ritalin in the first place...) This has cost me more relationships then I can count because the women I've dated end up taking it personally that they cannot "get me off".(even though I explain up front about the ritalin) I can only hope that you can prevent others from going through what I've had to go through...
