Dr. Baughman,
My son (who is 6 years old) was diagnosed with ADD and treated with
Adderall

for a period of three
months, before he came to live with me. When he did arrive, I didn't see
the same signs that were so clear to the teachers who had insisted that he
be treated for this condition with medication. So, I weaned him off of the
meds

you did the right thing.

. Since discontinuing the meds, he has
developed tics, his teacher has returned to label him as inattentive and his
grades have dropped as a result. I never see the indications that the
teachers describe while he is doing his schoolwork at home

.  My question is twofold;
One, will the tics that began with the medecation being removed, ever go
away?

[Fred A. Baughman Jr., MD:
no one can guanrantee that they will. However, I beleive that if
he is kept free of all drugs that, in time, the tics will lessen and wholly
abate. Some would such tics Tourette's syndrome. TS is a spontaneously
occurring form of tics, usually mild, abating as the person grows into
adulthood. When the tics appear only during or after Ritalin/amphetamine
exposure they are Ritalin-amphetamine induced tics, physician caused;
iatrogenic.

And two - what approach would you suggest I take with my son's
teacher, in order for him to meet his potential and not be labeled?

[Fred A. Baughman Jr., MD:
Schools
and teachers are on a power trip making brain pronouncements left and right.
They have become downright tyrannical and you can ill-afford to fight
them. They will call CPS down on you, hail you into court and threaten
loss of custody if you continue to resist. Best to get your son to a
private or a parochial school you have assured has nothing to do with this
sort of thing. You cannot best them in local courts if you keep him in
public schools intent on labeling and drugging him. Good luck, FB

 Thank You!
